SERIES 1: Joe Cordina

‘When I fall I go harder, when I fail I rise above it and when I win I push on to bigger and better things.

In my head I am a world champion because I have never lost in the ring. I am feeling fitter, stronger and sharper everyday.’

Stay tuned as we hit the gym with former feather-weight champion Joe Cordina to get under the skin of what drives his raw ambition to be the best in his game.

The ‘Welsh Wizard’ Joe Cordina, has snatched the attention of the boxing public-eye since he turned professional in 2017. He currently stands as former IBF world feather-weight champion with 15 wins, 0 loses and 0 draws - remaining undefeated in a total of 15 contests.

Undeterred, determined and despite setbacks Cordina is hungry to succeed and take back the title that is rightfully his.

We caught up with Cordina on all things training, mindset and setbacks. Read on to learn more.

How do you embody growth and development in your training, mindset and nutrition?

I work with a S&C coach and nutritionist to help look after my meals and help maintain my weight.

My mindset has allowed me to have a long amateur career. I have boxed all around the world. Throughout 180 amateur fights I have been able to control my emotions leading up to the fight and going into the ring.

My training coaches have helped to build me into the fighter I am today.

How do you improve? What’s in your mind that keeps you pushing for better?

There is no perfect fighter - there is always something to learn and always something to improve on. Regardless of who you are in the sport or what you have achieved, there’s always something to learn and always something to improve on. What keeps me motivated to improve is each percent.

I look at great fighters in the past and present for inspiration. I have goals I need to reach and boxes I want to tick off and that's what keeps me motivated on improving.

What sets you apart from the rest? What’s your story?

I am able to control my emotions and mindset going into fights. I have a young family I need to provide for, 3 kids that I need to look after and they are my motivation.

I am a world champion and soon to become a 2 time world champion.

What’s the piece of advice/saying that got you where you are?

I think the main thing that got me where I am today is sacrifice, I have sacrificed a lot - birthdays with my kids - I actually almost missed their births.

Sacrifice got me to where I am today and I am hungry all the time because of it.

What’s the biggest set back that you are grateful for?

The biggest setback I am grateful for even though I wasn’t happy about it at the time, was when I lost the Olympic games. I was one of the favourites to medal for team GB but I lost in the quarter final and it was a feeling I don’t ever want to feel again. And to never feel that again, I have to do everything in my power - everything my coach tells me - everything I am meant to be doing, just to make sure across the board, I am ticking every single box. Yeah, I just never want to feel that again.
